As print magazines and advertisements began to gain popularity in the early 20th century, the gender stereotypes and norms of that era were clearly reflected on to them as well. Most advertisements of this age promoted traditional ideas of masculinity and femininity, such as men working with heavy machinery, and women supporting a household. Yet, as more time went on, gender roles began to be challenged by American society. Nowadays in the 21st century, the genders are much closer to an equal playing field, and gender itself is a popular topic of discussion. However, have gender stereotypes and gender norms in American advertisement progressed the way our society has?
